Global Schools A 'Global School' integrates a wider, global dimension, into the core curriculum and whole school ethos. This is achieved through creative, cross-curricula work and by implementing initiatives - from policy to practice. We are working with two Brighton & Hove primary schools: Elm Grove Primary School and Cottesmore St Mary's RC School, both of which are set to become 'Global Schools'. Throughout 2009, Elm Grove developed their programme in numerous ways. One of which was Arts Week. Head Teacher John Lynch and Arts Co-ordinator Ian Trice prepared a series of activities that demonstrated positive examples of global dimension and community cohesion – throughout the school and wider community. "The Global School programme has had a significant effect on the approach to curriculum delivery at Elm Grove Primary... we are developing an increasing understanding of helping children to develop a global perspective when learning." John Lynch, Head Teacher, Elm Grove All teaching staff have been involved with training to encourage planning and implementation of the global dimension, school wide and throughout the year. Speaking world Spanish “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”- Nelson Mandela BPEC’s education team has been working with Judy Hawker, Brighton & Hove Primary Languages Consultant, following the successful teacher’s conference, March 2009, which examined global dimension in relation to language learning. We are thrilled to announce that colourful and creative resources for teaching Spanish while learning about Mexico are available for all Brighton & Hove teachers. Access is via the City Council's Virtual Learning Environment “Peer 2 Pier”. In light of this success, the education team are developing resources and schemes of work for teaching French while learning about Morocco. This project is in development with five local primary schools and their feeder secondary school. This will support the transition of languages from Year 6 to 7. Global learning for learning teachers BPEC's education team has begun its fourth year of working with a team of lecturers on the BA Primary Education, University of Brighton. The dedicated team are developing dynamic ways to integrate the global dimension within their course modules. In 2009, Global Citizenship was introduced in the first semester to first year BA students. This commences what will be a progression of understanding throughout their four year course. 'Making Connections', a third year module, examines cross curricular projects and requires students to develop work linking two foundation subjects and integrating an aspect of Global Citizenship within them. BPEC provides targeted Global Citizenship sessions to assist students. A module on 'International Education' is also delivered with third year BA students which has been very succesful in the last two years in developing understanding of global learning. PGCE (teacher training) lecturers have also committed to exploring the global dimension. In 2009, PGCE Secondary Geography students received training on the global dimension and best practice in International school partnership. |
