Projects the centre is involved in

BPEC is involved in a wide variety of projects to educate the local community about issues related to peace and sustainable development and enable people to engage in them. We have a community and a schools outreach program.

Library and Resource Centre

  • We provide a public information resource centre with a specialist library consisting of over 2000 books, teaching packs, artefacts, DVDs and videos.
  • Our environmental advice and information service provides free guidance on how to reduce your environmental impact

Outreach program

  • We reach out to the wider community, via workshops and open days, to get people involved and engaged in our education program.

Green Pages

  • We produce educational resources for the community such as our Green Pages Directory, a guide book on environment friendly and ethical businesses and services in Brighton and Hove. Available in the BPEC-Centre or in many shops in Brighton& Hove.

Groups

  • We support a network of other groups working on environmental sustainability, providing meeting space, information sharing, hosting events in partnership. We also take actively part in existing networks and events about the issues we seek to.

  • One of our groups which has its meetings regularly in the Centre is the Environmental & Advise group:

Because climate change is one of the major threats that we are facing nowadays we as individuals can cut down our carbon emissions just by changing a few habits in our daily activities, and therefore doing our bit to aid the planet.

The Information and Advice Project is aimed to show people how they can contribute to environmental sustainability. Focusing on delivering practical advice and help, volunteers will guide people on how to implement some small changes in different aspects of their life in order to be more environmentally friendly.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Energy use: tips to reduce energy consumption, how to improve the insulation in your home, green electricity providers, renewable energy and grants available.

  • Ethical shopping: where to buy, how to shop, different labels, local shops, sustainable shopping.

  • Transport: different means of transport, driving tips, what type of car to buy, car sharing companies.

  • Water: origin of the water, how water will be affected by climate change in Brighton and Hove, saving water tips.

  • Waste and recycling: how to reduce waste, reuse of items, what can you recycle, composting.

  • Holidays: where to go, how to travel and get around, choosing your accommodation, ecotourism, behaviour, souvenirs and local produce.

A carbon footprint test will be used to see which area of your lifestyle could be improved. Followed by a volunteer discussion who will talk you through the tips that best suits you.

For further information or if you would like to come in to the centre to measure your carbon footprint, contact us or just come into the centre.

  • We serve as a community collection point for recycling inkjet cartridges and old mobile phones)promote.
