LETS exchange
Bright Exchange
The kitchen sink has bust again and the plumber's going to charge you £300 just to turn up and have a look at it. But what if there was someone out there who could fix it in return for some help with their accounts, or a violin lesson, or maybe a big chocolate cake?
The Bright Exchange is another name for the Brighton and Hove Local Exchange Trading Scheme (LETS). Similar organisations exist in most towns in Britain. They are local networks of people who trade goods, services and skills on a cashless basis. DIY help, lifts, music lessons, and generally whatever people have to offer are exchanged on an hourly rate basis, with everybody's time valued equally.
The Bright Exchange has been going for twelve years, and is a healthy and vibrant part of the community. It's also a lending network, so if you need an electric drill, a very long ladder, a trailer, a wallpapering table or maybe just a set of pipe
cleaning rods there may be someone in the network who can help you.
