The Dhol Foundation brought Bhangra to Varndean School
In a day full of fun pupils of Varndean School learned to play Bhangra and other rhythms with Johnny Kalsi, the lead drummer of the mighty Dhol Foundation.
Brighton Peace and Environment Centre's 25th birthday celebrations got off to a thunderous start with the Dhol Foundation at Varndean School on Thursday 18th April.
Within just a few beats of Johnny Kalsi's Dohl drum the audience were out of their seats and ready to dance. The band got the crowd warmed up and then brought on their special guests - 22 Varndean Year 11 pupils who had been given the unique opportunity to spend the day with Johnny in a Bhangra inspired drumming workshop. Their rousing number 'twenty-two go mad' had families and fellow students shouting for more and Johnny claimed they were one of the most talented groups he'd ever worked with!
After taking their dues, the students reclaimed the dance floor as the Dhol Foundation continued to work their magic. Johnny introduced his fellow band members, showcasing each of their talents before rumblign into a track from their new album 'Druma and Roses'.
But even with so many dazzling highlights being delivered from the Dohl Foundation, the focus of the event was never clouded. Funded by DFID (Department for International Development) and organised by Varndean School and BPEC, the concert was an energising and powerful reminder of how world music can be used to celebrate cultural diversity and commonality, as well as to raise awareness of our respective roles in the local and global communities.
We would like to thank Varndean School and the Dhol Foundation for the great cooperation. ![]()
