Education, education, education
BPEC has recently become a Development Education Centre and we invite all member teachers and schools to use our exciting new resources!
The library is conveniently categorised into curriculum subject and key stage sections. We loan resources on issues such as conflict resolution, diversity, race equality, human rights and peace in the form of teaching packs, activities and books. As well as topics such as poetry, no-nonsense guides and biographies, there are also books in dual languages (such as English and Urdu) and some contemporary British Asian short story collections. A new literacy section has been developed with lots of books for all key stages featuring fiction and non-fiction subject matter. There are numerous Big Books which can be borrowed too.
The library also has artifacts for loan which include globally-sourced musical instruments, shrine artifacts, games, toys and textiles from around the world.
Amongst our instrument collection there are Tibetan bells, a djembe from West Africa, a dhol drum from India and an mbira (thumb piano) from Zimbabwe.
There are textiles for loan from a variety of sources including Mali, Senegal and antique saris from India. Also from India are several stunning puppets made from recycled sari material.
Games such as a karom board (fast Asian board game flicking counters into pockets), oware/mancala (an African game moving pine nuts around a system of pockets) and many other toys and games can be borrowed to enhance lessons. Plans are also underway to create resource boxes for loan which will be themed and contain toys, games, instruments and teaching activities with guidance notes.
To become a member and start making use of these great new resources, contact us for an application form. Yearly membership is £30 for the whole school or alternatively, individual teachers can become members for £15 per year.
*Why not invite staff from BPEC to your school to deliver a session on getting to know some of the new resources? We can provide support for teachers in getting the most out of the packs, activities and artifacts. Please contact Mandy Curtis at the Centre fordetails or to arrange a session.
