Bulldozer busted
On the 16th March a group of protesters calmly strolled in to the Caterpillar production factory in Birmingham with the intention of talking to management, Union representatives and workers. We wanted to discuss Caterpillar's sales of D9 bulldozers to Israel, and to request 3 minutes' silence to commemorate the death of Rachel Corrie - the 23-year-old peace activist deliberately run over by a military bulldozer while trying to defend Palestinian homes from demolition in Gaza on 16th March 2003. Caterpillar manufactured the bulldozer used for this unprovoked attack. Rather than give in to our "outrageous" demand, the management set off the fire alarms (probably with the intention of getting the protesters to leave). Instead, workers abandoned the factory, leaving the protesters inside alone for nearly an hour. As this factory produces parts for tanks as well as bulldozers and is a heavily restricted area, I have to say we are not impressed by their security. We did not get three minutes silence, but we did manage to get the factory shut down for five hours.
