Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
The Brighton, Hove & District Branch of WILPF were pleased to support the opening of the new BPEC premises with a donation, and to initiate an annual affiliation. We wish the Centre every success for the future.
WILPF International is the only women’s peace organisation enjoying consultative status with the United Nations. Our staff and international officers in Geneva and New York are involved in UN consultations on many issues relating to peace and disarmament, human rights and women’s interests. In fact, we were instrumental in lobbying for Security Council Resolution 1325 to be passed in 2000. This provides for the need to include women in all peace processes, and for women and girls to be protected from gender-based violence in situations of armed conflict.
We continue to campaign for the full implementation of the aims of the resolution.
The Brighton and Hove branch is active in local peace activities. Its latest public event is a peaceful gathering in Queen’s Park, Brighton, on Friday 6 August 2004, from 8 p.m. to mark the 49th anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb in Japan.
It is also an opportunity to remind us all that next year the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons agreement is due for re-negotiation.
