Cars for people who can live without them
The Brighton and Hove City Car Club offers all of the advantages of owning a new car, without the drawbacks. Members have access to locally based vehicles, and pay by the hour for the time they use them. The club currently has 14 cars available for use.
The club promotes sustainable transport solutions, discouraging car dependency. As a result of the club's existence, there are 9 fewer vehicles in Hanover.
In mainland Europe, where car clubs have been in operation since the late 1980's, studies show that members who give up their cars and join a car club reduce their car mileage by 60-70%.
The Brighton and Hove City Car Club was developed by the Hanover Community Association, who secured funding through the National Lottery and Brighton and Hove City Council. Following a successful pilot initiative, Smart Moves was commissioned to develop a local car club in 2003.
Members pay for the amount of time they use the car, plus a small mileage cost which includes fuel. Membership includes insurance, tax, MOT, breakdown cover and car maintenance.
