At the moment, British consumers can buy food from all corners of the globe, all year round. This is unsustainable. It is not economically viable or energy-efficient for most countries to depend heavily on a global food chain. Long distance transportation depletes oil resources and aggravates climate change. Widespread use of chemicals, and waste created by wrapping materials, harms the environment. Health may suffer from food's decreased nutritional value after long transport, and from the impact of chemicals on the body. Take action. Buy local, seasonal and organic foods. When buying food that cannot be grown in the region (e.g. coffee), buy fair-trade and organic products. Try growing your own food, it tastes better! As well as changing your own consumption, you can demand local, seasonal, organic and fair trade food in the public catering sector. You can also lobby for clear labelling systems to show how long and how far your food has travelled. Write to your MP, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs [1], the Food Standard Agency [2], supermarkets and food manufacturers.
