Organic Food
Organic farming is an agricultural method that avoids the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It uses crop rotation and other traditional methods to keep the soil fertile and the crops free of pests. It does not use genetically modified organisms.
Recycled organic waste (straw, grass and animal excreta) makes great fertilizer. Growing crops that are native to the region usually ensures that the plants already have high resistance to the local pests. Building up populations of beneficial insects (insects who feed on bad bugs) is a particularly effective method of pest control. Prevention is the organic farmer’s primary strategy.
Organic is the way that our grandparents used to eat when they were children. Undeniably, it is more expensive, because natural fertilizers and labour costs are higher than in conventional farming. However, not only does organic food generally contain higher levels of vitamins, protein and minerals, but it also tastes more natural. And of course, it is more ecologically friendly!
