Lewes Road Guerilla Gardeners Fight Tesco

Ever since the community garden on Lewes Road sprang up in May 2009, local residents have been aware that it cannot last.  When people first cleared away the fly tipped rubbish, laid turf atop the concrete and planted flowers, they knew that one day the bulldozers would be back to claim the land.

What they didn't know was that when they came, it would be to build a new Tesco store and a betting shop on the site.  It was clear that a battle was about to begin.
