| Nuclear Power - Not the answer to Climate Change |
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) are currently campaigning by saying No to Nuclear Power.Goverment spin doctors and the nuclear industry myth makers are working overtime repackaging nuclear power as a 'green' solution to climate change,But nuclear power is no fix,it's not quick and its not worth the risk. Nuclear power is not the answer - it is not carbon-free. The whole nuclear cycle from uranium mining onwards produces more greenhouse gases than most renewable energy sources, with up to 50% more emissions than wind power. Doubling nuclear power in the UK would only reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% and this would come too late as each power station takes at least ten years to be up and running. We must act now on climate change. A combination of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures are available and are safe, effective, and proven technologies with the capacity to create thousands of new jobs. Nuclear power produces enormous amounts of carcinogenic radioactive waste, some of which is dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years. Building new power stations would increase the most high level toxic waste five fold. There is still no safe, long-term solution for storing this waste, yet the government wants to cap the price of dealing with it for the industry now. Nuclear power is also expensive. The British public massively subsidises the nuclear industry. Decommissioning all of our current nuclear sites is costing us more than £70 billion. If a big accident happens, as well as facing disastrous human and environmental costs, the taxpayer will have to foot the clean-up bill. Catastrophic accidents including human error or mechanical failure can never be ruled out and there is always the risk of terrible nuclear accidents like Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Windscale (Sellafield) happening again. Human health is also a major concern and even small amounts of radiation exposure may be harmful and nuclear power stations are routienly allowed to release low levels of radioactive emissions into the environment. Growing eveidence indicates that cancer clusters are linked to nuclear power – a German government study showed that there were large increases in cancer in children under five living near nuclear power stations. Uranium mining has taken the lives of many miners around the world too. It also creates more radioactive waste and environmental contamination. Terrorism attacks on power staions are a real threat. Plus, the more radioactive materials in the world, the greater the risk that some will get into the wrong hands and be used to make a dirty bomb. The nuclear power and nuclear weapons industries share a common technological basis. As long as our government promotes nuclear power world-wide, there is always the risk other countries qill use the technology to build up a nuclear weapons capability just a we did. A nuclear weapons-free world require a non-nuclear energy policy. To find out more information on the campaign for No to Nuclear Power, click here
